Western Algarve
With over 100 miles of varied coastline, beautiful, clean, sandy beaches are one of the Algarve’s greatest assets.Whether you prefer long sandy stretches with ample facilities or tiny isolated coves, visitors are never disappointed. Although the beaches of the Algarve are consistently sandy, the cut of the coastline varies considerably.To the West, at Sagres, you will find high, rocky, dramatic cliffs, whereas the stretch from Salema to Lagos and Praia da Rocha consists of mainly fossil cliffs and a selection of pretty coves and grottoes, some of which are only accessible by sea. Praia da Rocha:One of the widest bays, and the most beautiful in the Algarve region, it comes as no surprise that Praia da Rocha can get very busy, but there is plenty to keep beachgoers occupied along the lively seafront including restaurants, cafes and an excellent range of water sports. Lagos:From the delta of rivers Odiáxere and Arão, Meia Praia is a stunning beach of soft sand which stretches to the east of Lagos town.A series of cove beaches fringe south of Lagos, and are all within easy walking distance of the Old Town.A short walk takes you to the sheltered bays of Praia do Pinhão and Praia de Dona Ana. Praia da Luz:A fantastic, wide crescent of sand, Praia da Luz is an ideal family beach, equipped with water sports throughout the summer months and great for surfing and body boarding during the winter. Sagres:A short walk down the hill from the village lies the excellent beach at Sagres. Praia da Mareta is overlooked by a lovely sea food restaurant – Talheiro do Infante. Praia da Castelejo:A stunning stretch of beach situated on the rugged west coast of the Algarve, complete with incredible rock formations and cliffs.The many coves and private stretches of this beach ensure even in the height of summer, it is possible to find a secluded spot to call your own. Praia da Cordama:A wide, rugged stretch of sand, the beach has everything to offer the adventurous family.A short drive from Praia da Castelejo, the beach at Cordama is one of the most beautiful of the uncommercial beaches of the Algarve’s west coast. Praia da Bordeira:A rare sight on the Algarve’s rugged west coast, Praia da Bordeira is relatively flat with deep sands merging inland to wide dunes and the river valley.

Armação de Pêra: Claimed to be the longest in the Algarve, the beach at Armação de Pêra is lined with palm trees and stretches as far as the eye can see.The wide, sandy bay backs on to the bustling town amenities and is perfect for children with plenty of water sports on offer. Albufeira:Backed by sandstone cliffs, this wide, sweeping expanse of beach is the root of much of Albufeira’s charm.Cafes and restaurants line the waterfront – the perfect spot for watching the colourful fishing boats return with their catch. Fisherman’s Beach (Praia dos Pescadores):Found on the eastern edge of Albufeira, the beach is bustling with local fishermen repairing their nets and boats, which have been pulled on to the sand.The beach is a great scenic spot for photographs. Vale do Lobo:This excellent beach, right at the heart of the luxurious Vale do Lobo resort is perfect for families and couples of all ages.A vast expanse of clear sand, Praia de Vale do Lobo also has a range of exciting water sports. Ferragudo (Praia Grande):Passing through the fishing village Ferragudo before Portimao, lies the Praia Grande beach.The beach is ideal for families with its sheltered bay. Praia do São Rafael:Situated between the Travel Club of Upminster resorts of Albufeira and Armação de Pêra, this beautiful, crescent shaped beach is protected by spectacular cliff faces.Water sports and a range of beach bars create the ideal summer environment. |
