| The Portuguese island of Madeira is situated around 530 miles south west of the mainland and is lapped by the gulf stream waters which bring mild winters and warm summers – in fact the perfect climate for a holiday at any time of the year. |
The island is just 35 miles long by 13 miles wide with stunning volcanic scenery, soaring, craggy mountains dotted with small pretty villages, deep ravines, forests, rocky coves and towering cliffs dropping down into the deep oceans where sperm whales can sometimes be seen.
It is often known as the ‘floating island’ and is a botanists dream. It seems that every garden is a botanical wonderland and just about everything you can imagine grows in wild abundance including bananas, dates, fruit trees of many types, frangipani, poinsettias, bouganvillea, cannas and orchids to name but a few. The fragrances from the flowers dance around on the sea breezes adding to the island’s ‘garden of Eden’ feel.
Funchal, the island’s cosmopolitan capital has a sophisticated air and bags of colonian charm. The buildings are traditional whitewashed or black basalt and the attractive and intricate patterned cobbles of the pavements will be familiar to visitors to the Algarve or Lisbon. There is a good selection of restaurants, known for local seafoods and the shopping opportunities include everything from stylish boutiques to local handicrafts such as lace and wicker work, not forgetting of course the excellent Madeira wine.
As always we have steered away from the concrete jungles and sought out hotels which we think will suit Travel Club of Upminster customers perfectly, each offering either fantastic views, colonian charm, luxurious accommodation or just plain peace and quiet – the choice is yours! |
