West of Hania: Gerani, Aghia Marina and Platanias
| West of Hania are the villages of Gerani and Aghia Marina – perfect holiday destinations for those seeking genuine Cretan hospitality in a relatively unspoilt setting. The north west of Crete has long, open, sometimes wild, beaches – part sand, part shingle – punctuated by small seafront developments with bars and restaurants. Lush green hills rise steeply behind the coastal strip, whose landscape is characterised by tall native rushes, bamboo, olive and orange groves, dotted here and there with the startling colours of bougainvillaea on whitewashed walls. |
| Gerani is a small, quiet coastal village in one of the most fertile areas of western Crete full of orange and olive groves with views of the outstanding White Mountains. For centuries the loggerhead sea turtles have returned to these beaches just after the August full moon to lay their eggs. Aghia Marina is a lively resort on a fine sandy beach that stretches for nearly 4km, offering a great selection of bars, restaurants and shops. The old village of Aghia Marina is set 1km from the beach, with an equally good selection of tavernas. Mid-way between Aghia Marina and Gerani is Platanias, a lively, bustling town, with amenities for young and old. The old village of Platanias, 1km inland, looks down on the newer resort – the views are magnificent. Platanias has many tavernas, restaurants, bars and coffee/ice-cream shops. There is a frequent bus service to beautiful Hania which is always worth a visit. Travel Club of Upminster has three self-catering properties and two hotels located a couple of kilometres east and west of Platanias town, which is easy to get to. Hence customers can easily mix the peace and tranquillity of Gerani with the ease of Aghia Marina and the Cretan town-life of Platanias. Transfer time from Hania Airport: 40 minutes. |
