Villages in the San Stefanos Area :
Peroulades:Peroulades is an unspoilt, traditional village with a maze of alleyways housing mansions and old cottages, many of which date back 100 years.From Longas Beach, at the end of the village, sunset views over the island are always beautiful and the beach path leads to marvellous coastal rock formations.
Magoulades:Built on a hilltop, with a history stretching back many years, Magoulades is home to The Church of Saint Theodora – the largest in the area.High on the hillside, with great views of the sea, the Monastery of Ipsili is a beautiful example of Corfu’s religious heritage.
Kavadades:The village was established during the Byzantine era as a cloth making factory and named Kanvades (canvas), which later became Kavadades.Each household in the village also makes their own wine, for which the village is famous.
Rachtades:A semi-abandoned village, it is one of a few untouched by the outside world.Rachtades was established in the 13th century, when residents of nearby Armenades fell out with local authorities and moved to this new site.The small village square is shaded by the Tree of Idleness where the few locals sit, enjoying coffee and catching up on local gossip.
Villages in the Aharavi Area Old Perithia:A feature of the Pantokrator mountain range, this Venetian village includes stone-built mansions and many churches and is the most impressive example of the old lifestyle to be found on the island.Today, it is a natural museum, inhabited by two or three Corfoit families who occupy themselves with smallholding.
Klimatia:With beautiful courtyards and a picturesque square, the Klimatia village road leads to the legendary cave of Anthropograva and monastery of Agia Triada.Built at an altitude of 450 metres, the monastery of Agia Triada (the Holy Trinity) has been a place of devotion to God since the 15th century.Its frescoes date back to 1672 and its stunning icons on the icon screen, painted in 1850, are of particular interest. |
