Corfu Town
Corfu's capital boasts a host of wonderful colonial and Venetian architecture and a range of fantastic shops and markets. The beautiful old town has a maze of narrow streets, bursting at the seams with craft, jewellery and clothes shops and small boutiques.Corfu Town has a very cosmopolitan feel, with a range of designer shops and stylish restaurants along the elegant Esplanade.
Local Craft Work
Corfoit artists and craftsmen, once famous for the quality of their work, have slowly become an endangered species, and local workshops have found it difficult to survive. This is just a small selection of those that are still dedicated to producing traditional pieces and a great place to pick up some authentic souveniers:
- Patounis Soap Factory (Corfu Town):Apostolos Patounis, whose great-great grandfather founded Patounis Soap in 1902, believes it is one of the few establishments left which makes pure, traditional olive oil soap by the old fashioned ‘stamped' method, as opposed to the more conventional process. All of the soaps are also 100% biodegradable.
- Costa Olive Wood Workshop (Kavadades):Olive wood is obviously found in abundance on the island of Corfu and has long been used to create essential tools and equipment for the islanders.Having grown up on an olive farm, Costas opened a workshop, allowing him to make and sell a range of wares fashioned from the wood.He doesn't use any chemicals, preferring to treat the wood with only organic materials.
- Aleka's Lace House (Kassiopi):The shop is a showcase for the skills of Greek embroidery, weaving, pillow lave and crochet with a large selection of authentic hand made table cloths, bed spreads, curtains and rugs.
